In a post last year we noted that the cost of sequencing an individual’s genome was expected to drop to $100 and take less than ten minutes. We’re not there yet, but Life Technologies has announced that they will be introducing an instrument in 2012 that can sequence a genome for $1000 and do it in one day. Good news, and moving in the right direction. Still, the bottleneck in putting sequenced genomes to real use in helping people is in their interpretation. To my knowledge, it still takes a year to do that. Does anyone know if progress is being made on that front? That would be big news.
