As more medical products move from the hospital to the home, ease of use will become paramount. Designing for ease of use requires careful consideration and analysis of numerous scenarios. Combine a novice home user with a stressful situation and opportunities for error increase dramatically. Things that are easy to think through and accomplish under normal circumstances become exponentially more difficult as stress levels rise. If the product you are designing is critical to a patient’s well-being, make sure you understand how users could respond in a stressful, emergency situation and do everything possible to design for ease of use under that circumstance.
