There are a number of cardiac monitors on the market that can be used to monitor heart activity over a period of time. One of the drawbacks to current technology is the need for gel to keep electrodes in place and maintain electrical contact. Orbital Research, Inc.  has developed an electrode that doesn’t require gel. Instead, the electrode has a series of bumps designed into its surface. The bumps serve as conductive mechanical locking features that maintain contact with the skin. Because there is no hassle with gels, patient compliance goes up. There is also less signal noise due to the fact that the electrode can’t move laterally, which is not the case with traditional electrodes.
