Last week I presented a problem to illustrate how rearranging the components of the problem can help you see in different ways to develop creative solutions. Here’s the solution:
When you view the links in the context of a square, an obvious solution presents itself: break 4 links, weld 4 links = $20.
But changing the arrangement of the pieces helps you see a more efficient solution:
Take one piece of 3 links, break the 3 links and weld them at the 3 points of the triangle = $15.
This puzzle might seem trivial on its face. But try the rearranging technique on one of your own problems. I think you will find it remarkable how rearranging the pieces and parts helps you see the problem in an entirely new way.
