Implantable biosensors are the future of sensing technology. Not only will they be implantable, but they will be able to be placed in the body in a minimally invasive manner via injection.
The Profusa company will be introducing an injectable oxygen sensor. One key to the technology is that it is built within a hydrogel scaffold. The hydrogel material allows the sensor to be biologically compatible with surrounding tissue and not initiate a foreign body response. The sensor is read by a small device (either hand-held or worn on the body) that sends light through the skin and reads the resulting fluorescence of the biochemical markers the sensor captures. This is more evidence of how harnessing light is going to be a major factor in technological advances in medical device design over the course of this century.
